PROBLEM TO SOLVE / BILINGUALISM OR MONLINGUIALISM
I've found all kind of problem in the teaching of
english, from cultural, academical, administrative and linguistic too. In any case,
there are a few who believe the intensive teaching of english as second
language could benefit a society like ours. On the contrary many think this
contaminate our native language; but what few know is like the government policies
affect bilinguism progress in a nation and the enrichment of the native
language, which on the way could help develope the native skills so that young
people improve their abilities to be a better human being, a professional and a
spiritual one full of joy in quest of his/her happiness.
When two languages are in contact their linguistic
systems merge. This joining create a resistance between them bringing out the
bilingualism becoming stagnant if there is not good government policies which
help improved this problem. There are two kinds of bilingualism a cult and a
popular one. I will call them a formal (used by high people) and an informal
one (the low class). There are few who believe the cult bilinguals’ enrich the
developing of native skills. The formal bilingualism is synonym of cult
language because it is enriched by means of the translator as the popular
bilingualism is synonym of contaminated language and make the popular one becoming
stagnant since the translation approach is the one most used by teachers in
Colombia in the public school, where are the poor students, due to the low
intensity hours in the teaching. In public schools English is not even taught three
hours weekly and least when there is a big quantity of extracurricular
activities. The question is if the formal bilingualism enrich or not the native
skills in low class students when the translation approach is used in the
teaching: Also the skill applied in the state examination is reading so they
are no being prepared to talk or hold a simple conversation, they are prepared
just to read not for speaking, an important skill in doing business and so
forth. Many do not know what there is at the bottom of this problem in
Colombia. There are a huge quantity of teachers monolinguals who are not able
to teach whatever subject in English and they take up most of the time in
teaching other subjects different to English.
